Random story if any of you St. Thomas people remember Dr. Mott.  I think he is one of the best professor's I've ever head.

 

I remember in my sophomore year of college I was taking some obscure philosophy course with Dr. Mott.  Great guy, great class.  I'd had a rough day, and for some reason thought I could get away with sneaking a giant mason jar of scotch, straight up, into the class to wind down while he stretched my brain.  This was pretty risky as I was underage and it was a strict Catholic university.  Some narc finally made a remark like "Dr. Mott, I don't think that's apple juice in Bob's hand."

His reply:  "Very good, it's scotch.  Leave him alone, he works for a living and he's had a hard day."  So I got pretty drunk and had a couple of key insights.

 

The dude just got it.   I was sad when he left UST.  I understand that he came out of the closet and is a gay Catholic activist of some sort, and apparently well-loved, as I would expect.   It seems that he has poked the University in it's underbelly once too often for his job security, but at least his situation got the attention of the New York Times.   I hope that leads him to a wonderful next stage in his career.

 

Oh, and he also wrote a paper on marriage that I intend to read as soon as I have a spare hour or so.
